Book Review:

Up until this point our family has utilized the Charlotte Mason method for teaching history. However, as we approached 5th grade and early American history, I was hesitant to continue in that vein, because I didn’t want to miss some important aspect of the time period.

Enter History Alive. As textbooks go, it is not thick at all, but don’t let this fool you. Everything you need to know is laid out in a simple yet well thought out manner. It is cohesive, not dry as sometimes historical text can be, with enough oomph to be both informative and engaging.
Sure, you won’t get the zoom in type of effect the way you would through a living book, but you will definitely get the zoom out effect of being able to understand this time period from a bird’s eye view and from the big picture type of perspective.

I was also very pleased to find that the chapters on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights include information on our government and the way it works. Great introduction to civics.

This text does not include any questions or activities, so the workbook is highly recommended as it offers a plethora of deep, critical thinking type questions, graphs, metaphors, etc, all geared towards helping your student understand the information presented. No busy work. I will be leaving a separate review for it on its page.

Very pleased.
Using supplemental texts for our homeschool history class, but that’s just my preference. This book can most assuredly be used as a stand alone resource for the purposes of educating early American history through late elementary and middle school years”Amazon Reader

About the Author:

Bertha Muzzy Sinclair or Sinclair-Cowannée Muzzy (November 15, 1871 – July 23, 1940), best known by her pseudonym B. M. Bower, was an American author who wrote novels, fictional short stories, and screenplays about the American Old West. Her works, featuring cowboys and cows of the Flying U Ranch in Montana, reflected “an interest in ranch life, the use of working cowboys as main characters (even in romantic plots), the occasional appearance of eastern types for the sake of contrast, a sense of western geography as simultaneously harsh and grand, and a good deal of factual attention to such matters as cattle branding and bronc busting.”She was married three times: to Clayton Bower in 1890, to Bertrand William Sinclair (also a Western author) in 1905, and to Robert Elsworth Cowan in 1921. However, she chose to publish under the name Bower.
